"> We get asked all the time, especially from our customers outside Southeast Alabama, what exactly is a Boll Weevil? Well the Boll Weevil is a beetle that eats cotton and it had a lasting impact on the south but especially the area around Enterprise Alabama, where Boll Weevil Soap Company is based. The economy that allowed Boll Weevil Soap Company to thrive in its inception over 20 years ago and now has its roots in the amazing Boll Weevil Story.

Since the inception of the United States in 1776,  the Southern states thrived agriculturally and economically on the rich cotton crops.  The old saying was true, “Cotton was King”.  In the early 1900’s the Boll Weevil began creeping its way from the Texas/Mexico border slowly toward the deep south eating its way through those rich cotton crops and leaving a path of economic and agricultural devastation.  George Washington Carver and others had been warning of the approaching disaster and had urged farmers to diversify crops,  including peanuts.  Farmers here in Enterprise, AL were some of the first to take the leap into this new found cash crop called peanuts.  The farmers gamble paid off and now South Alabama and South Georgia are the largest producers of peanuts in the world.  If you have eaten a peanut or peanut product lately,  it probably came from here and you can thank George Washington Carver,  the farmers in South Alabama,  and of course,  the Boll Weevil.

The Boll Weevil infestation lead to the diversification of crops and proved to be more prosperous than it was ever imagined.  It resulted in a strengthened southern economy and a higher standard of living for everyone throughout the South.  The story is a great example of making the best out of a bad situation,  and having the open mindedness to embrace new ideas,  new things and new people.  On December 11, 1919 the citizens of Enterprise, Alabama erected the only monument in the world commemorating a bug.  The monument stands here in downtown Enterprise just 4 doors down from our headquarters, as a symbol of resilience and willingness to change for the better.  You see without the bug there would probably be no Enterprise, Alabama.  Without Enterprise, Alabama as our roots we would have never had Boll Weevil Soap Company,  and would not be able to share our handmade products with the world.  So just like everyone else in the south and the world,  we owe a lot to this little brown bug.

We are thrilled to greet visitors daily to our store to share with them our handmade body products and candles.  We are also thrilled share with them our Boll Weevil just down the street.  This website allows us to share our products and the Boll Weevil with the world.  Shop our Handmade Products today!
